Garden of Reflection and Remembrance
About the Garden of Reflection and Remembrance
In the Spring 2007 semester, Memorial Chapel was awarded a $200,000 grant from the TKF Foundation to create a garden of Reflection and Remembrance on the South side of the Chapel. In the wake of our busy lives and recent tragedies such as September 11th and the Virginia Tech massacre, it has never been more important for the campus community to have a place to stop, reflect and take a few moments to breathe. The two-phase project will include a labyrinth, veterans recognition, elements to recognize the religious diversity on campus, a remembrance walk to commemorate milestones in the life of the University, and other components that will create spaces for contemplation.

The Garden Task Force
Over the summer, the Task Force has been meeting regularly to conceptualize the design of the garden and its components. Chaired by Marsha Guenzler-Stevens, Director of Activities at the Stamp Student Union, and comprised of stakeholders from on-and-of campus, the group has been hard at work making this idea into a reality. For specific information about the planning process feel free to contact Marsha at mguenzle@umd.edu.
Supporting the Garden Project
Through the TKF Foundation’s generous gift we are able to start work on this exciting project; however, additional funding will be needed to see it through to completion.
If you are interested in supporting this initiative of one of its components please contact Jim Rychner, Director of Development for Student Affairs at jjr@umd.edu.
